When you transfer photos from an iPhone to a Windows PC, you'll find that Windows can't open the .heic files. Windows does not include HEIC support by default. Fortunately, there are several quick solutions — including a completely free, no-install option.
Method 1: Install the HEIF Image Extensions (Microsoft Store)
The easiest long-term fix is to install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Once installed, Windows Photos, File Explorer thumbnail previews, and other Windows apps will display HEIC files natively.
- 1
Open the Microsoft Store on your Windows 10 or 11 PC.
- 2
Search for "HEIF Image Extensions" and install the free codec published by Microsoft.
- 3
After installation, open any .heic file directly in Windows Photos or view thumbnails in File Explorer.
Some users may also need the "HEVC Video Extensions" codec ($0.99) for full functionality, but most HEIC photos from iPhones open fine with just the free HEIF extension.
Method 2: Use a Free Third-Party Image Viewer
If you prefer not to install Microsoft Store codecs, several free image viewers support HEIC natively:
- →
IrfanView — lightweight and free; install the PlugIns pack to enable HEIC support.
- →
XnView MP — free for personal use; excellent multi-format viewer with HEIC support out of the box.
- →
GIMP 2.10+ — free, open-source image editor that can open and export HEIC files.
Method 3: Convert HEIC to JPG in Your Browser (No Install)
The fastest solution with zero installation: use HEICIMG to convert your HEIC photos to JPG or PNG directly in your browser. The conversion is 100% private — your files never leave your device.
- 1
Open HEICIMG.com in your browser (Edge, Chrome, or Firefox).
- 2
Drag and drop your HEIC files or click to browse.
- 3
Select JPG or PNG output and click Convert.
- 4
Download your converted files instantly.
No software to install, no account required, no uploads to any server. Works on any Windows PC.
