HEICIMG
File Format Guide

What is a HEIC File?

HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad. Here's what it means, why it exists, and when to convert it.

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a modern image format developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). Based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard, it became Apple's default camera format starting with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra. When you take a photo on an iPhone, it's saved as a .heic file by default.

Key Features of HEIC

Better compression

HEIC files are typically 40–50% smaller than JPEGs at equivalent visual quality, saving storage space on your device.

16-bit color depth

Supports up to 16 bits per color channel vs. JPEG's 8 bits - enabling richer colors and more subtle gradients.

Live Photos and image sequences

A single HEIC file can store both a still image and a short video clip - perfect for Apple's Live Photos feature.

Transparency support

Like PNG, HEIC supports alpha channels for images with transparent areas.

Compatibility Issues

Despite its advantages, HEIC isn't universally supported:

Platform HEIC Support
iPhone / iPad / MacNative support
Windows 10/11Requires codec or conversion
AndroidLimited, varies by app
Web browsersNot widely supported
Social media / emailUsually not accepted

When Should You Convert HEIC to JPG or PNG?

  • When sharing photos with Windows or Android users
  • When uploading to websites, social media, or email
  • When using image editing software that doesn't support HEIC
  • When you need a smaller file size for web use (use JPG)
  • When you need transparency or lossless quality (use PNG)

HEIC vs JPG vs PNG: Quick Comparison

Feature HEIC JPG PNG
File size Smallest (40-50% less than JPG) Small (lossy compression) Largest (lossless)
Quality Excellent (up to 16-bit) Good (8-bit, lossy) Perfect (lossless)
Compatibility Apple devices only Universal Universal
Transparency Supported Not supported Supported

How to Open HEIC Files on Windows 10 and 11

  • 1

Install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Windows Photos and File Explorer will then display HEIC files natively.

  • 2

Use a third-party image viewer like IrfanView or XnView MP — both support HEIC without extra codecs.

  • 3

Convert HEIC to JPG or PNG with HEICIMG. No software to install — open the page and convert instantly.

How to Open HEIC Files on Android

Android does not natively support HEIC. Here are your options:

  • Google Photos can display HEIC files shared from iPhone on some Android devices.
  • Use a third-party viewer like Google Files or a dedicated HEIC viewer app.
  • Convert HEIC files to JPG using HEICIMG before transferring to your Android device.

Why Does Apple Use HEIC Instead of JPG?

Apple adopted HEIC (based on the HEVC/H.265 video codec) with iOS 11 in 2017. The core reason is efficiency: HEIC achieves roughly 40-50% better compression than JPEG at the same visual quality. For a 12-megapixel iPhone photo, that means about 3 MB as HEIC compared to 6 MB as JPEG.

HEVC's superior compression lets Apple store more photos at higher quality on the same device storage. For iPhone users who shoot hundreds of photos, this difference adds up quickly. The format also supports HDR, wide color gamuts, and Live Photo sequences in a single container.
